Derek Cunningham is a cancer survivor and today he’s climbing Sydney’s iconic Harbour Bridge in recognition of World Cancer Day 2020.
Diagnosed in 2003 with bowel cancer, Derek attributes his recovery to the medical researchers whose work helped diagnose and treat him.
“I survived my cancer journey largely through the research done prior to my diagnosis. I believe cancer research holds the key to reducing the pain and suffering of a cancer diagnosis and treatment. Also, it will hopefully, one day, find a cure.”
Derek is an active member of CONCERT’s Community Cancer Panel Steering Committee where he provides feedback and participates in decision-making processes on research proposals and projects from a cancer survivor’s perspective.
“Volunteering as a consumer in cancer research is a way of giving something back and to try and make the battle a little easier for newly-diagnosed patients.”
